Washington Elementary School is located on the east side of Merrill, at 1900 East 6th Street. Students from Gleason, Irma, the city of Merrill and surrounding areas all attend Washington. The school has a diverse population of approximately 300 students, including English speakers and English language learners.
The Washington staff prides itself on providing student-centered education, and starts by establishing a positive relationship with children and families. Washington's "School Families" activities, "Positive Actions With Students" reward system, and "Positive Behavior and Intervention Support" discipline system are just some examples of our commitment to this ideal.
Besides providing a strong academic foundation, the Washington staff emphasizes conservation, environmental awareness, and compassion for others. Students recycle paper, turn food scraps into compost, and participate in "green" activities throughout the year. An outdoor classroom is used by staff to promote science and care for the environment. Food drives for our local food pantry and fundraisers to support UNICEF and American Red Cross relief efforts are led by students and staff alike.
The school day at Washington does not end when the bell rings. After-school programs, such as tutoring, enrichment, and "Lighted Schoolhouse" nights are facilitated by a grant. The PTO promotes family involvement through special events such as the Aloha Hop, BINGO night, Secret Santa, and family fun day in the school forest.
All parents and community members have an open invitation to visit the school. Come see what makes Washington School such a great place to learn!
